I lost interest when I saw this one preview where there's like this snake monster that they get attacked by and the whole thing is done like every other monster attack in every fantasy movie with a quest in it. The fact that was the teaser indicated to me the whole thing is probably uninspired.

Looked like a straight up actioner, which is a bit of a disappointment for me.

Love the visual style and baddie designs though.

i dont know how good 9 will be, but the fact that its getting hyped up so much is really cool considering the director was taking the same exact classes 5 years ago that i will be taking next year. shows how far a thesis film goes as far as being a calling card to the film industry

when are you going to realize it's not where you take classes or who was there before you, it's about using what you know, making something great and putting it out there. talking big is fine and dandy but it won't get you anywhere, or at least anywhere worth bragging about.

Post by: f0d on September 2, 2009 08:59 PM
sorry didnt mean for it to sound like bragging im just gettin excited/nervous about the upcoming school year

im simply saying if a mediocre thesis film like 9, or any other student film for that matter, can within 4 years be remade into a feature film funded by tim burton, it should give hope to all young animators. its a really good time to be going into this industry and especially to know how to do 3D.

its true that it doesn't really matter where you go to school, but it definitely matters which classes you take so you can learn the skills you need to make good shit. i dont know anything about maya yet i still got to learn that

Post by: jjjjjjjjjj on September 11, 2009 03:44 PM
the world the movie was set in was neat and felt like the old nostalgic futuristic future and the monsters were goddamn neat
the problem is the movie fell flat on the last 1/3 of the movie
one huge build up and it just sort of stops
Title: 9
Post by: ansel on September 11, 2009 07:49 PM
just saw it, gonna agree with j about it deflating after the first 2/3rds or so, which is basically just a sequence of robot battles. the robots are pretty badass, but you can only watch so many robot fights in a row before it starts to get old. there's no real build-up at the beginning, it kind of leaps right into the plot and so none of the events seem to hold any weight--they just happen.

and yeah the ending was disappointing and surprising in a bad way

also this asshole and his two asshole kids came in and they did not shut up the entire movie and when i asked him to control his offspring he shushed them once and then gave up
if i ever have kids i will beat them if they talk in a movie theater

I've never seen it, but it looks like a whole mess of production value and zero substantial value.

Finally saw it a little while ago, I haven't had a chance to get to the movies in about a month.  I have the same as everyone else's thoughts, it looked cool but the story was mediocre.

also someone count how many tim burton movies start with someone building something he's got a construction fetish or something i swear to god

It'd be kind of hard to think Burton is the director considering everyone was complaining about it for half a page.  And I obviously read the posts or I couldn't have said I agree with them.  It's not backtracking, I couldn't come up with a good way to word it.

i went to a screening of 9 the other night. i liked the movie simply because i got lost in the near photorealism at some parts. the story, character design, and voice acting definitely sucked, but the animation and backgrounds were great.

shane acker then answered questions and after a few compliments suddenly everyone was questioning the story's logic and plot holes. he fired back that when they were storyboarding the studio halted the project, then took it away from him and gave it to the screenwriter of monster house and corpse bride. he admitted the story's shortcomings and wished he had had a little more time for character development and that they hadn't cut so much in favor of mindless action sequences.

i was kinda surprised, most filmmakers would've been defensive but he acted like the shortcomings of the film bothered him more than anyone else. i think once he gets a good script he could potentially make an amazing film

Has tim burton ever been creatively involved in a movie because lately I dont know what to think when I see "tim burton" somewhere in a movie poster.

he directed sweeney todd (sucked), corpse bride (sucked), big fish (doesnt suck), and a few other films

i thought sweeney todd wasnt bad but holy shit johnny depp needs to learn to sing
Title: 9
Post by: rtil on October 12, 2009 06:31 PM
that was one of the main problems with it. he hired actors instead of singers in a musical

Title: 9
Post by: rtil on October 12, 2009 08:26 PM
who said anything about hating them - i said they sucked. sweeney todd has some good visuals, but it's a bad, poorly cast musical. corpse bride has good animation but musical segments but the story is lame.

for me, the best part of todd was seeing tim burton make something horrifyingly gorey for once.

as 'dark' as people seem to consider him, theres really not much in any of his films thats objectionable. except todd.

I just watched this movie my cousin snatched on a usb

I tought it was ok but yeah its a lot of action and then it sort of stops

I liked the characters, tought it was cool to just have a number be everyones name. It probably would have worked more as a cartoon or a tv series instead of a movie, you know, to have more character development and have more time to tell the whole story. It just feels like they left a lot of loose ends or something. Feels unfinished somehow as a movie.
