Hey guys, had a quick search of the forums and I was surprised there was no thread for this, considering you're all autistic manchildren it's such a popular game

after like 2 years since playing religiously I picked up the new games, they're pretty good, so if anyone wants to trade/battle drop your friend codes below or something idk

anyway i haven't played pogeymans in a while because i was too lazy to tansfer my items from X/Y to OR/AS. but if you have 6 mule pokemon to help me transfer items then we can do a battle or something afterwards.

Yeah.

My 3DS friend code is 5129-2508-2545.

I'm currently somewhat rusty at Pokémon, and only own X and don't have any intentions of getting OmegaRuby/AlphaSapphire in the foreseeable future. With that in mind, I'd also like to test my capacity to use my [PokéGen] to create ‘legit’ Pokémon before I start doing it in exchange for favours. So I'm offering free Pokémon to your specifications at the moment. Limited time offer, and I'm feeling generous currently, so I advise you take advantage promptly if this is something up your alley, honey. How splendid.

I was thinking about it recently.

Does anyone else think Pokemon was so successful/has endured so long because it's basically a synecdoche for capitalism.

I think all JRPGs are crypto-capitalist to a degree, but with Pokemon the capitalist ideology is baked right into the crust.

I mean the tagline is "Gotta catch 'em all," which is of course the objective of the game but is also a subliminal message to hoard Pokemon i.e. Pokemon merchandise i.e. material possessions.

In pretty much every JRPG you earn money through "grinding" which is pretty much wage slavery.

Just throwing that out there.

A lot of newer videogame genres I think could be interpreted as having analogy in a mode of living in a capitalist country.

Survival horror and stealth games (until MGSV) obviously simulates impoverishment, or the impoverished trying to survive in a world ruled by capitalists (See: the estate in Resident Evil 1, the police station in 2, the Ashford compound in Code: Veronica, the military industrial complex/hyperreality in MGS), while games like Silent Hill and Fatal Frame typically convey the decay of of idyllic capitalist locales (in SH's case) or the unwelcome return of old world entities (in both cases).

Games like Animal Crossing and the Sims typically illustrate the bourgeois concept of social mobility. Shooters probably fall somewhere between here and the last category.

I think that leaves most RPGs, RTS games and god simulators for the ruling class. In RPGs you typically start out as an everyman who journeys into the untamed wild to earn his/her fortune and "save the world" (see: the Rockefellers, the Vanderbilts, the Carnegies, the Hearsts, etc.) who after a few quests learn that they are "the Chosen" and then proceed to topple whatever questionably evil force was until then holding the world together (the aristocracy, the government, God, etc.). The connection other two genres is more obvious.

Party on.

i think a lot of people who still play pokemon know deep down inside they've been buying the same game since they were kids but nintendo mixes it up just enough so one could justify continuing to purchase it. also there's the kawaii factor

well yeah no shit, video games allow you to feel like you actually accomplish something, even if those achievements matter or not; everyone wants to be the hero, but in the real world, not everyone can.
Also there's some wierd psychofuckery about getting achievements and doing things in games that's responsible for the success microtransactions and MMO/moba madness.

Good video for this:

Sorry guys, I've been a little busy, and I didn't expect this thread to garner much activity at all.

I STILL haven't finished X version.

I really didn't like X at all. I much preferred ORAS, but I really did enjoy the cosmetic aspects of X, the whole changing your trainer's outfit was really cool.

I do indeed, if I'm on irc in the near future I'll drop you a message, that'd be cool.

My 3DS friend code is 5129-2508-2545.

I'm currently somewhat rusty at Pokémon, and only own X and don't have any intentions of getting OmegaRuby/AlphaSapphire in the foreseeable future. Thank you very much for the offer, but I've basically completed my dex (outside of illegal events), and I've bred everything I need for a competitive team, outside of a few, which I plan to do later in the year.

i think a lot of people who still play pokemon know deep down inside they've been buying the same game since they were kids but nintendo mixes it up just enough so one could justify continuing to purchase it. also there's the kawaii factor

Yeah, entirely true. Nintendo softens the blow a little by making it easy for you to transfer pokemon from game to game, so it feels like more of a long-term commitment. I still have my original starter from R/S/E that I recently ported on to ORAS, it's pretty nostalgic.

It's been two years since X version came out so I guess I'm gonna finish it and then fagetaboutit.

And since it's nearly Halloween. Who's your favorite ghost type? Mine would be...

Honestly I liked X/Y better. The few new pokemon designs were stellar, like Meowstic for example.

I hope they have a 3DS counter part to that game, I don't want to buy a new phone just to enjoy it (I still have an iPhone 4...).

Chandelure has my heart as favourite ghosty, one of the few brilliant 5th gen designs

Obviously there's been a couple designs I like from the newer generations, but by far I think I like the G/S era mons the best. Slowking<3
