mIRC is a chat program that you can leave on and hide in your status bar when you're not using it. it allows you to quickly go in and out of the chatroom as you please. it's free and lightweight.
get mIRC
quick connect:
say /server irc.rizon.net. If a window pops up with a bunch of channels, uncheck "pop-up favorites on connect" and close it.
once connected, say /join #thebackalleys

basic commands:

• change your nickname: /nick newname
• register your nickname: /ns register password e-mail use a real e-mail address - it is used to verify your registration later.
• identify your nickname (a.k.a login): /ns identify password you must identify yourself every time you connect to the server. you can tell mIRC to do this automatically. this will be covered below.
• join a channel: /j #channel
• leave a channel: /leave
• quickly leave and rejoin a channel: /hop
• private message user: /msg username message [i]a new chat window won't appear until they respond to you
• change e-mail: /ns set email new@email
• change password: /ns set password newpassword
• nickserv (nickname server) help: /ns help

how to set up mIRC to automatically connect, identify and join the channel every time you open mIRC:

1. Go to Tools->Options
2. Expand IRC and select Auto rejoin on kick
3. Expand Connect and go to Servers
4. Scroll down to Rizon and press Select. If Rizon is not an option, hit Add and put in these parameters:
   [**]Description: Rizon
   [**]IRC Server: irc.rizon.net
   [**]Ports: 6667
   [**]leave the rest blank and hit Add, then make sure it's selected
5. Go to Options
6. Check Connect on startup and Reconnect on disconnection
7. Press Perform
8. Check Enable perform on connect
9. Under Network press Add and select Rizon
10. Copy and paste the following commands in the text box:

    /join #thebackalleys
11. You're done! Hit OK, restart mIRC and let it do its magic. If a window pops up with a bunch of channels, uncheck "pop-up favorites on connect" and close it.

FAQ:

• what does + mean? +v, or a + by your name, means you have voice. Voice is useful when the channel is moderated (+m), during which people without voice are not allowed to speak.
• how can i go away? there is an away mode, but it's not very useful. it works by saying /away reason and /away when you're back. but people can only see it if they /whois you, a way of checking the status of an online nick. a better method of showing you're away is adding an [a] or [away] to the end of your nickname (ex rtil[a], rtil[away] or rtil-away). Here's a quick script you can use to toggle your away mode automatically. To use this, go to Tools -> Scripts Editor, and copy this on a new line on the Aliases tab:
